Cardiac Tamponade is a medical emergency where fluid accumulates in the pericardial space, exerting pressure on the heart and impairing its ability to pump effectively.

Key Signs and Symptoms

  • Classic Triad:
    • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
    • Muffled heart sounds
    • Distended neck veins (jugular venous distension)
  • Other symptoms may include:
    • Tachycardia
    • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
    • Pulsus paradoxus (a drop in blood pressure during inhalation)

Nursing Interventions

  1. Assess Vital Signs: Monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate.
  2. Perform Cardiac Monitoring: Observe for arrhythmias and changes in heart rhythm.
  3. Administer Oxygen: Ensure adequate oxygenation.
  4. Prepare for Pericardiocentesis: Assist with the procedure to remove excess fluid.
  5. Educate the Patient and Family: Provide information about the condition and treatment options.
  6. Monitor for Complications: Be vigilant for signs of shock or further cardiac compromise.
